Story

“Àvia”—meaning “grandmother” in Catalan—is a documentary that follows the life of Montserrat Gispert Cruellas, who fled Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War and relocated to Mexico at the age of seven.
Now 83 and retired from her career as a botanist, Montserrat sets out to document her life and legacy through film, working alongside her grandson, filmmaker Rodrigo Imas.
Together, they transform her memories into a visual journey that reflects on exile, identity, and the graceful acceptance of life’s final chapter.
